Knife Care & Maintenance
A quick guide to keeping your Larevo blade at its best.
Blade Care
Carbon Steel Blades
- Cleaning: Wipe the blade clean immediately after use. Acidic foods (like citrus, tomatoes, or onions) can cause spotting or rust if left on the surface.
- Drying: Always dry thoroughly with a soft cloth. Never leave a carbon steel knife wet or in the sink.
- Oiling: Apply a thin coat of food-safe mineral oil or camellia oil periodically to protect against rust and discoloration.
- Patina: Expect your carbon steel knife to develop a natural patina over time. This is normal and helps protect the blade.
Stainless Steel Blades
- Cleaning: Stainless steel resists rust better than carbon steel, but it is not rust-proof. Clean promptly after use.
- Drying: Dry completely before storage to prevent spotting or corrosion.
- Sharpening: Stainless tends to hold an edge longer, but when sharpening is needed, use whetstones or professional sharpening for best results.
Handle Care
-
Micarta, G10, and Other Composites
- Cleaning: These are durable, low-maintenance materials. Simply wash with mild soap and warm water, then dry.
- Care: No oiling is necessary, but avoid prolonged soaking.
-
Carbon Fiber and Titanium Handles
- Cleaning: Wipe down with a soft cloth. Use mild soap and water if necessary, but always dry fully. Windex works great on Timascus or any type of forged titanium products, it really brings out the colors.
- Care: These materials are highly stable and require little maintenance beyond keeping them clean.
Wood & Natural Material Handles
- Cleaning: Wipe with a damp cloth and dry immediately. Do not soak in water or let water sit on the material long.
- Conditioning: Treat with mineral oil, Axe Wax, Renaissance Wax or a wood-safe conditioner every few months to prevent drying and cracking. '
- Regular cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to gently wipe the ivory surface. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
- Moisturize occasionally: Apply a small amount of mineral oil or ivory-specific conditioner using a soft cloth to keep ivory hydrated and prevent cracks.
- Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from heat or humidity. Avoid airtight containers to prevent moisture buildup.
- Handle with care: Avoid dropping or knocking handles against hard surfaces to prevent chips or cracks.
- Installation caution: Screws can damage exotic materials if overtightened. Tighten gently or, safest of all, don’t remove the scales.
- Avoid exposure to extreme conditions: Keep Mammoth ivory or wooden scales away from direct sunlight for extended time, avoid excessive heat, and moisture to prevent discoloration, warping, or cracking.
